The Importance of Quality Cocoa Beans for Kokonut Pacific’s Cocoa Factory

Cocoa farmers, processors, extension officers and KPSI staff in Folotana, North Malaita after attending training on cocoa quality.

As the Product Manager at Kokonut Pacific Solomon Islands, I have the incredible responsibility of steering our cocoa factory at KOSI towards success. Earlier this year, I shared our vision for establishing the factory, focusing on our commitment to quality and sustainable practices. With the world price of cocoa beans skyrocketing this year, we face unique challenges and opportunities that we must address to ensure our factory thrives.

The Impact of Quality beans on Our CocoaFactory

One vital lesson has become increasingly clear: good quality cocoa beans is the foundation of KOSI cocoa factory. As prices soar, we have noticed a concerning trend—a decline in the quality of beans. This drop in quality is particularly alarming, given our mission to produce exceptional cocoa products to meet the international standards that benefit both our farmers and our processors.

For the first few months of this journey, I dedicated my time and effort to training cocoa processors in Malaita and Makira Province. The primary objective was to elevate the quality of the cocoa beans that are essential for our factory’s operation. Without good quality beans, our factory cannot function.

Setting Up for Success

In addition to training, we have spent countless hours getting acquainted with the machinery and establishing efficient production processes. Understanding the technical nuances of our equipment has been incredibly rewarding but also challenging. By ensuring tha tour factory is equipped to handle high-quality cocoa beans, we lay the groundwork for successful production and distribution of our products.

However, it’s crucial to recognise that the success of our factory hinges on the farmers in our supply chain. They must produce quality beans to meet the demands of our factory and, ultimately, the market. We are committed to supporting them through rigorous training programs that focus not only on harvesting techniques but also on the essential value of high-quality cocoa.

Beyond Cocoa: Health and Nutrition

During our training sessions and visits, we have emphasised the importance of value-added education. While we often think of cocoa primarily as a source of income, it’s also a vital food source with numerous health benefits. I firmly believe that our farmers should not only view cocoa as a commodity for wealth but also as a nutritious food that they should integrate into their diets.

Our vision is for our farmers to process and enjoy their cocoa beans. Thus, we aim to provide them with the skills needed to add value to their harvest, which can lead to better nutrition fortheir families and communities.

Bridging the Supply-Demand Gap

Despite the strong inquiries we've received about our cocoa products, we currently struggle to meet that demand due to poor-quality beans arriving at our factory. There is a significant market for our high-quality cocoa products, and the challenge lies in fixing the supply chain to match this growing demand. By focusing on improving the quality of cocoa beans, we can ensure that our factory runs efficiently and produces the exceptional products that our customers desire.

A Challenging Yet Rewarding Journey

It’s essential to recognise that my role in this project is both challenging and fulfilling. The path to establishing a successful cocoa factory is paved with hard work and dedication, but knowing that I am supporting our farmers to attain fair value for their cocoa beans makes it all worthwhile.

To all our stakeholders and supporters, thank you for believing in KOSI. Together, we are not only building a factory but also a sustainable future for our farmers, processors and the economy of this country. As we continue this journey, I will keep you updated on our progress and the markable transformations taking place with cocoa and coconut products. Stay tuned for more exciting developments as we cultivate quality and opportunity!
